The Challenge For Public Sociology

R. Todd Hiett

Assignment #2

SOC 103

Dr. Camara Douglas

Vexing the category of cultural science examining society intellectually is a propensity for judgmental bias providing impetus for "Recapturing the Sociological Imagination: The Challenge For Public Sociology" from the Handbook For Public Sociology Pages 171 - 186. At publication time and beyond laid the conceit from those left of center that anyone antonymous was cerebrally inferior, unhinged, xenophobic, or a religious fanatic. Giving meta vibrations to the problems acknowledged is the effort it lacks to suppress the leftist default it supports with this exact attitude, but with a lesson in etiquette. This was the George W. Bush era, when 911 jack-hammered the psychic topography of our nation creating a mighty fissure blown into a canyon via news and entertainment media interference, political opportunism, and an algorithm the paramount influences.

Ideologically this adherence flies in the face of what categorically it represents - science. Immutability being the promise of it's disciplines, the divider of the social varieties regards humans. Opinions can slant our cultural education when that word alone can be co-opted into a buzzword. The eye behind the lens should not mutate the information, but the study of humans becomes corrupt when assertions are made about the subject, or worse, ascribed to the object. The class, race, gender, bearing, and breeding of a scientist should only matter when anecdotal support offers an informed opinion. Often, representative scenarios are snapshots or potential anomalies. These should be seen as such without broader contextual support.

The need for this is never more valid than Public Sociology. Science is pragmatic, unemotional, and this is ethical because itself and Mathematics are loving parents, but strict. If we follow data, greater numbers get addressed. Understood there will be issues where marginalization slips through, but if we support Ethics it is counter to such - approaching intellectual societal improvements emotionally - and I posit loss of the African identity in America as evidence.

Brown vs Board of Education I've maintained, was a faulty decision. Establishment of our largest mid-century policy dictated by the emotions of children was naive. Black Conservatives of the 1940s were proponents of segregation with notions of community money staying within it's context supporting their schools, businesses, and churches cultivating Africa in America. This situation, akin to populations like Little Italy's, Chinatown's, barrios sometimes mirrored in suburbs, and myriad other ingredients in the melting pot staying true but savoring the freedoms of the States could have been a Promised Land rather than the bitterness many on all sides of the equation experience because of the overarching concepts of these topics.

Unfortunately, pragmatism is viewed as a Conservative value whereas ofttimes extreme progressivism embraced left of the aisle caters regularly to emotional responses having undesirable consequences impacting communities of marginal status.

2015 had Marriage Equality which aforementioned Bush assured voters he'd stop for good granted by our highest judicial body (Obama regarding his opinion on Gay Marriage amounted to "I'll have to look into it", but term two's polling safety had the proud proclamation "My Gay brothers and sisters!") with LGBTQ's largest civil rights organization the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) shy a cause, problematic for a bustling titan of tax-devoid employees and revenue. A cultural element catching fire was Transgender rights with bizarre upsets like social media activists dog-piling Royals William and Kate for the audacity of declaring their first born a boy rather than letting the child decide. The HRC re-galvanized itself with a credo to not rest until the rights and lives of all Trans folk were safe. Tricky as Marriage Equality was a mammoth issue making it to an Archie Comics cover and the Supreme Court but Sexual Dysphoria impacted 3% of the nation, making it fathomable to hire each afflicted a lawyer and bodyguard. What followed in eight years was a ballooning population of Transgender children, causing a Los Angeles practicing post-op doctor and leading authority on Trans kids to pen an alarming editorial on this phenomenon, calling out it's many dangers to society particularly using a child's anatomy, physiology, and psyche as a fashion statement. The MD was relieved of her job, cited as "transphobic", and the carrying newspaper groveled apologetically. The author of the piece being stripped of credentials disrupted the guessable center of this phenomenon - lucre. A medical patient for life. Getting a child to declare gender confusion began the cradle-to-grave insurance billing for counseling of numerous styles, hormone blockers prepubescent, surgeries, enhancements, regimes and meds for the inevitable cardiac and osteoporosis issues from and not to mention the hormones themselves. The age of the Transgender-Industrial Complex had arrived.

Kids' classrooms were visited by cross-dressers, in at least one infamous scenario garbed as a nun. Sex-changed biological men towered over female sportspeople they trounced in visually absurd competition, some resultant in brutal injuries, unwelcome sights in the locker room adding insult to them. Female inmates born different chromasomally brought pregnancies to prisons. Inevitably moderate Americans without dogs in the gender race transformed with fatigue, brought on by multitudes of human megaphones largely sexually binary.

Resultant of this backlash in my own sphere is the repealing of gender-affirming care for the incarcerated. Assigned blame as with most things by many the Republican in the Oval now wearing the tag transphobic astride racist, fascist, misogynist, xenophobic, antisemitic, and other non sequiturs (himself married to two foreigners, bearing Jewish grand-babies, and the 1.0 cabinet having the virtual identity makeup of Obama's) scads of politically irritated and academically immersed social justice advocates could ascribe. The genuinely aggrieved in this are folks who have taken hormones in select cases for decades now experiencing "third puberty", reputedly a hellish experience mind, body, and soul. As witness applying critical thought here the commander and chief in first term saw support from Republican Caitlin née Bruce Jenner after discussion between them, and likely the four year after rejoinder was not awaiting an opportunity to attack the gender reassigned this was answering to an exhausted base of former apathetic independents putting someone back in the seat they saw as immune to red tape, not catering to the pronoun-obsessed wanting to discuss/engage complex sexual discourse with children. Such behaviors were endorsed 100% by the sitting president and potential replacement vice via a zero tolerance policy of any denial directed at the transgender community without separation of the ludicrous.

The latter situations were in another body politically in the multiverse created by relativity both as a fragment of time and a moral scenario. Science can allow for relativity, but the second type described is the heart of the issue for political ideologies many have defected from in the last near decade. The inability to state that absurdities already described for party solidarity is to many as loathsome as the manipulation of the deeply dogmatic in the former that proved impotent in the face of the Supreme Court.

"The intellectual ought to be the moral conscience of the society" - C. Wright Mills, early 1960's (Furedi, 2009) Sociologists could have significant impact if that were the goal. The inciting article is woven with the intelligentsia's burden to save the planet from itself. Noteworthy is his commentary about condescension facing education. Speaking of the non-classically educated and the dirth of knowledge tradespeople and similar ilk carry with greater practical application in a variety of situations than those pursuing the higher mind. Socrates, the spiritual essence of the university was an advocate of the Vocational set according to the 1987 book The Closing Of the American Mind by Allan Bloom, extolling on their potency to elites. Bloom's book is a fascinating treatise on intellectualism and the University ecosystem being corrupted by notions that everything is relative without absolutes, and the only things he saw the typical student of that day attach to was the self. He augured situations like the journey from Gay rights to Trans-Madness in essence with those assertions.

I have begun compiling elements for a book proposal about a topic to introduce to the sociological imagination titled Meaningful Incarceration: The Art Of Living Locked Down. Conceptually, time is centerpiece and commodity with access to education, religious organizations, physical fitness, and the building of a 2.0 upgrade civilian hybrid with a lifestyle embracing abundance when and where all seems lost. The access to a free college education is amazing but I have come to realize that I am guilty of sometimes "Paltrow-ing" other convicts. Dubious of White Privilege, I see that I have advantages and telling numerous peers to attend college without plans plus their bearing is counterproductive. The latter I say without insult. Numerous Black students from urban centers and Appalachian Whites have paid others to do their work post-entry because even with a GED grammatical demands are sharks in the shallow end of the oceans of success. With Vocational education touted by today's economists the smart money choice, I am beginning to direct more of these compatriots in that direction especially as I had two rounds myself, and the first one got me employment in Graphic Arts that I wound up parlaying into a job in Amsterdam, honing my love of culture studies.

As for intellect, those same cons understand politics with keen insight typically, particularly the ghetto set aged 30 and up. The germ of this is simple: their wheelhouse is political - crime, punishment, and the penal system. Their understanding of the gears of government is from experience. Joseph Roach, a former gangster now legal aide attending Kentucky State University was the first to illuminate me to the POTUS today seeing no red tape and that's why he's a supporter. When a comrade told this African-American Muslim he did not think our leader racist, Roach stated he didn't care if he was or not. He simply liked the fact he proved the things others claimed unachievable this president debunked, an observation leading to my realization that the legal profession has been the singular most corrosive influence of the 20th and thus far this century. Enlightened upon exit after many conversations with career criminals, gang affiliated sorts especially.

My personal goal is to get a Master's in Journalism and bring the topic to inmates as a major through a second chance program. True crime is America's top nonfiction genre with a massive interest in prison life which inspired me through an outside proxy to create my own website BatmamaAndRobbers.com where I blog from the inside, give prison recipes, offer my tablets "mixtapes", present articles, stories, graphic novel reviews, and academic essays. Plus, the kids of today distrust the reporting media. What better demographic to fulfill it than a population looking for reinvention and redemption? This is worthwhile work for someone aspiring to be looked back at as an intellectual using that moral aspiration Mills spoke of.

Socrates as I mentioned was the soul of higher education, not a morally relative sort. He laughed at his executioners the day of his death and could hardly have been less of a concrete type had he been a statue. The college of 2026 is his Devil where nothing looks chessboard, only grays and this is choking critical thought with the deprivation of tough conversations that could advance culture to me the goal of fruitful Public Sociology.

With an apropos quote taken from Blooms American Mind book, I will end:

"Civilization, or to say the same thing education is the taming or domestication of the soul's raw passions - not suppressing or excising them, which would deprive the soul of its energy - but forming and informing them as art." (Bloom, 1987)
